Popular SEO Misconception Regarding Google Search Patents 2018

Google’s patents 2018 related to the Search and Quality space generate a lot of interest among the SEO community as they are powerful indicators of the direction of search being envisaged by Google. But SEO community and Webmasters very often go overboard and start making a host of unwarranted assumptions regarding the technology Google is using or going to use for search and ranking sites and the possible implications for them.

Matt Cutts Dispelling SEO Misconception on Patents

It is this very SEO misconception on Google search patents filing and actual technology applied for search that Google’s head of search spam, Matt Cuttssought to dispel in a You Tube video dated May 1,2013. He says:

Practical Illustration on SEO Misconceptions on patents

In the video, Matt Cutts cites an example of a Google Patent called Ranking Documents, which basically underlines the rationale behind why rankings for certain websites fluctuate before achieving a settled position. This patent was completely misunderstood by Webmasters and the SEO community to imply that Google might potentially be flagging websites that were reacting to every Google update by updating their website, in other words, websites which were optimizing based on Google updates. However, a close peruse of the officially filed patent makes it abundantly clear that Google is not intending to penalize optimization, but is more specifically aiming at patenting the methods or technologies to detect spam based on the page change mechanism adopted. The SEO community can rest easy now that this misconception has been cleared with clear signals that relevant and informative site improvements will continue to generate good search rankings.

Ignoring Patents altogether is also not the Answer

However, that does not mean that you can altogether discount patents filed by Google related to search technology. The fact remains that while they might not necessarily be using the patented search technology currently, a search patent filed by Google actually presents a significant opportunity to learn the technology direction being envisaged for search as well as the assumptions that Google’s search engine is making regarding search and searchers. Also, a patent technology not being used currently does in no way indicate that Google might not have employed it in the past or will not consider using it in the future.

It is an almost impossible task to try and ascertain if a patented technology is actually being employed by a search engine, and can be even more difficult to ascertain direct linkage to search results if the technology is purely back-end process related.

When your site is ranked at the top on Google, this is when the true battle begins. Having lost the number one spot, former rank leaders will definitely increase their SEO budgets to fight back. This battle never stops.

It would, therefore, be correct to say that is a safer strategy to rely on adhering to stated Google webmaster guidelines for search engine optimization rather than indulging in misconceptions with potentially disastrous consequences.
