Bye Bye Orkut: Google announces shut down of its first Social networking site

Come September and Google will shut down its early social-networking service, Orkut, which has failed to give Google a headstart in the social networking space.

A service that saw early adopters in Brazil & India but hasn’t found enough takers in other parts of the world, will bid adieu on September 30th. While no new accounts can be opened on Orkut, existing users will be able to use their services normally till the 30 September. Today, an estimated 50 percent of Orkut users are in Brazil, 20 percent in India and sub 18 percent are from the U.S.

“Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut’s growth, we’ve decided to bid Orkut farewell,” Google said in a post on the Orkut blog.

It is interesting trivia to know that Orkut was born as a result of Google’s 20 percent initiative, which allowed employees to spend 20 percent of their working week on new projects.

Google has announced that it will archive all Orkut communities.”If you don’t want your posts or name to be included in the community archive, you can remove Orkut permanently from your Google account,” Google said. The Orkut app is also being removed from Google Play and the App Store.

It is interesting to know that Orkut had its genesis in 2004, the same year that Facebook was founded, which is currently the world’s No.1 social network with 1.28 billion users.

Shutting down Orkut seems to be a part of Google’s spring-cleaning mission, which has seen other closures such as Google Apps for Teams, Google Listen and Google Video for Business, as well as several Google-created blogs for products and services. It also put a stop to Google Sync, a host of calendar features, and punched.
